Kentucky Derby 2012!
This year was tons of fun. I was able to find some great deals and make TWO hats instead of only one!! Yay! I found some basic sunhats on sale at Kohl’s for $15 each and the flowers and ribbon were 50% off at Micheal’s Craft Store! The brown and white magnolia hat has been a dream of mine for a while to make and I love how season-less and timeless it is (Now I have a perfect hat for the Traver’s Cup, which is run in late summer). The guava hydrangea and striped hat is very modern and youthful, making it different than most derby hats I’ve seen.
I was able to find a great dress at Goodwill from Banana Republic that still had the tags on it (pictured with me derby hat from last year). It is a great dress because the abstract floral print makes it springy and fresh but the simple black/white color scheme makes it easy to pair with almost any hat!
For those of you not into the large sunhat style, I also threw together a little something with my favorite thrift store dress (it’s from Dirt Chic and is Cynthia Rowley) paired with a vintage 1940s velvet pillbox hat. This look is still feminine and certainly acceptable in The Club House while being demure and simple.
It was a great 138th Run for the Roses!
